Databricks AI/BI · Conversational analytics

Natural language becomes SQL.
Questions become decisions.

Databricks Genie is a conversational AI layer over your governed warehouse data. It lets ops and trust & safety teams ask complex questions in plain English and get back answers, charts and the exact SQL that produced them.

What Genie is

A conversational interface to a governed data warehouse.

Not a dashboard

Dashboards answer the questions you anticipated. Genie answers the question you just thought of.

Not a chatbot wrapper

Genie does not guess at data. It generates SQL against real Delta tables, then executes it in a serverless warehouse.

Not a black box

The query, the tables and the result manifest are exposed. Trust is demonstrated, not asserted.

Capabilities

What Genie can do today.

Natural language → SQL

Analysts ask in their own vocabulary. Genie reasons over the Unity Catalog schema, picks tables, joins and filters, and generates the query.

Threaded conversations

Follow-ups keep context. 'And what about last week?' or 'Just the VIP segment' refine the prior question without rewriting it.

Curated instructions

Space owners embed business logic, synonyms and guardrails so Genie understands 'blocked' means decision = 'BLOCKED' and 'high-value' means amount > $500.

Trusted queries

Verified question patterns can be pinned as trusted queries, giving analysts a vetted starting point for the most common investigations.

Schema-aware reasoning

Genie reads table and column comments, primary keys and relationships, so it writes joins that match the actual data model.

Result manifest + SQL

Every answer ships with the generated SQL and a typed result manifest. The result is reproducible, reviewable and ready for audit.

Use cases

Risk questions Genie can answer.

01

Order investigation

'Why was ORD-000221 blocked?' Genie returns the decision, reason, fraud score and customer context in seconds — no ticket queue.

02

Regional block-rate review

'Show me the POD rejection rate by region for the last 7 days.' Genie produces a bar chart and the exact SQL behind it.

03

Segment risk profiling

'Which customer segments have the highest fraud risk this month?' Genie groups, scores and ranks segments from live warehouse data.

04

Week-over-week comparison

'Compare block rate this week vs. last week.' Genie understands the time window, computes both periods and surfaces the delta.

05

Anomaly drill-in

'What's driving the spike in blocked orders on Tuesdays?' Genie explores dimensions, finds the contributing factor and shows its work.

06

Executive readout

'How many orders were approved vs. blocked today?' Genie returns a clean stat callout with the count and the query for the slide deck.

How I look at it

Genie is the core, not a feature.

"Remove Genie and TrustGenie has no engine. There is no hand-written query layer to fall back on. Every answer originates from a Genie-generated query against governed Delta tables."

That is the point. Most AI demos bolt a chat window onto a static API. This app does the opposite: it exposes Genie as the primary interface to the warehouse. The frontend is thin, the prompts are thin, the trust is in the SQL.

I see Genie as the fastest way to make a warehouse conversational without giving up governance. It is not a replacement for analysts — it is a multiplier. The hard thinking still happens; it just happens in natural language first, and SQL second.

Why companies should care

Faster answers. Governed data. Defensible decisions.

Reduce analyst backlog

Most risk questions are routine but urgent. Genie answers them directly, so data engineers spend less time writing one-off SQL and more time building.

Shrink decision windows

A blocked order, a VIP complaint or a delivery exception cannot wait hours. Genie turns the question into a query in seconds, not tickets.

Keep governance intact

Because Genie runs against Unity Catalog with a service principal, permissions, lineage and audit logs stay where they belong — in Databricks.

Trust through transparency

Every answer carries the generated SQL. Teams can verify, reproduce and defend decisions instead of trusting a black box.

Try it

Ask a real question against real data.

The TrustGenie console is wired to a live Databricks Genie Space. Pick one of the benchmark questions or type your own — every response includes its generated SQL.

The best enterprise apps will not be the ones with the most AI features. They will be the ones that make AI feel inevitable, invisible and accountable — exactly what Genie makes possible over a governed warehouse.
